Roger Draper, the Chief Executive of the Lawn Tennis Association, has publically stated that security at Wimbledon has been strengthened in the wake of this morning’s attempted car bomb explosion in Haymarket, London. Speaking to Radio Five Live, Mr Draper confirmed that security throughout the remainder of the world-famous tennis championships would be “intensified”.
As described in previous News Items, police this morning discovered a potential bomb in a silver Mercedes, which had been crashed into a bin close to the ‘Tiger Tiger’ nightclub. This, they subsequently managed to explode in a controlled manner, but the incident has gained much coverage, including a statement earlier today by Britain’s new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. In this, he urged the British public to remain vigilant.
The effects of this morning have rippled across London, with widespread increases in security, of which Wimbledon’s, by virtue of its current relevance, is one of the most prominent. In conversation with Radio 5, Mr Draper reaffirmed this, stating: "We are a high-profile event and the championships take security very seriously. This year in particular everything has been tightened up for people out there. All around the ground the security has been intensified."
The severity of the new security regime has been detailed by Mark Petchey; the former coach of British tennis superstar Andy Murray, and who, for the Wimbledon period, is broadcasting from the event. He states: "What happened in Haymarket last night has had an effect here. Every single car at the moment is getting searched going into every single car park here at Wimbledon. It took me about 25 minutes to get in just before 8am this morning. It's very serious."
