No longer the preserve of the military and law enforcement agencies, thermal imaging is now a viable option for the security and surveillance industry at large.
FLIR Systems is the world's largest manufacturer of thermal imaging cameras for a wide range of commercial applications. FLIR Systems manufactures all the critical components of its thermal imaging systems in-house. From detector to optics FLIR Systems has full control over the production and quality assurance processes.
It offers a broad spectrum of solutions, price points, performance specifications and configuration options. Expert training and support is provided by its worldwide network of 100+ distributors which are supported by more than 20 FLIR Systems offices worldwide.
The special talents of thermal imaging are being able to produce a clear image in total darkness, long operation range, round-the-clock detection and the ability to do the job in foul weather when there is no ambient light. The range of a FLIR Systems thermal camera can be far greater than that of a conventional daylight camera; up to 25kms if needs be.
It requires no supplementary lighting to work and is therefore especially useful at night, providing covert detection. As it detects heat a thermal imaging camera can also be useful during daylight. Camouflaged people that are trying to hide in shrubs or shadows will easily be detected by a thermal imaging camera. Thermal imaging remains effective in adverse weather conditions such as light fog, rain and snow.
The SR-35x140MS combines two thermal imaging cameras with a low light camera for constant surveillance of the same area. It provides a high-resolution image for target identification nested in a wide field-of-view image for superb situational awareness with continuous zoom between the two.
The technology mimics the human eye in that it offers high resolution at the centre of the scene. This is achieved by the two uncooled thermal imagers, respectively with a narrow- and a wide-angle field of view lens. This combination allows the operator to monitor an entire area without losing detail.
Never has thermal imaging for security and surveillance applications been more affordable. FLIR Systems has been able to reflect the cost benefits of its volume production in the purchase price of the new addition to its static range. The VSR-6 therefore comes with a price tag of under €2,895.
The VSR-6 features the same thermal imaging technology found in many of FLIR Systems' most sophisticated security and surveillance systems, but is packaged for users who have short-range security and surveillance as their primary application. It includes FLIR Systems' advanced image processing techniques which provide excellent contrast regardless of scene dynamics.
The HRC series thermal imaging cameras from FLIR Systems are ideal for border and costal surveillance but also for mid-range threat detection. They have a powerful optical zoom capability on the thermal image, a superior alternative to systems using a rotating lens. This allows the cameras to see much more detail once a target has been detected, complementing excellent situational awareness.
Whilst a rotating lens system interrupts visual contact with the target the new HRC cameras allow the operator to gradually zoom in without losing that focus. There is no switching or swapping between images involved to distract the operator.
