Traffic Control Center Madrid, Spain with Eyevis large screen

eyevis - Visual Display Systems

The Spanish capital Madrid is one of the pioneers in Europe concerning the installation and use of a modern and intelligent traffi c control system.

With more than 3.1 million inhabitants, Madrid is the third biggest City within the European Union.

In order to keep control of the traffic in Madrid and it nearer suburbs with a total of 5 million inhabitants, the city of Madrid was one of the first major European capitals that had a traffic control system installed.

The control room has been equipped with a large screen system from eyevis to enable the operators in the control room to fulfi l this challenging task. A video wall consisting of 10 rear-projection cubes is the core of the new system. In a 5x2 configuration these cubes form a continuous desktop surface for the display of all kinds of signal sources from the connected workstations and network sources.

The sources can be automatically switched with help of freely definable wall presets and the windows can be freely scaled and placed, independently from the borders of the individual cube borders. The operators in the control room have various different tasks.

Some control the flow of the traffic in the inner zone. Therefore they use intelligent software solutions that control the traffic lights, but they can also control them manually. Additionally they have the signals from 144 video cameras and other sensors to help them do their job.

The outer ring control-staff has also the duty to operate the displays of traffic information system on the outer rings and tunnels. Other operators control the operation of the connected traffic lights, cameras and pollution control systems. This allows a central administration of service and maintenance works.

Again, two other operators are responsible for the information exchange with the emergency services and the media. Thanks to the flexible and open-platform design of the hard- and software components from eyevis, the system could be easily integrated to the other systems in the control room. The installation in Madrid contains the following eyevis components:

  • 10 x EC-67-XC (modular rear-projection cube with 67" screen diagonal and XGA resolution
    [1024 x 768pixel]).
  • 1 x NPX 4010-V64-R2 graphic controller.
  • 1 x eyecon wall management software.
