The Merian-Iselin Hospital in Basle is being converted. In north-east Switzerland, it is regarded as the leading health center in the field of orthopaedics.
Always „up to date" both medically and technologically, it uses the latest Selecta till systems.
Standing still is the same as taking a step back: This is a motto that has always motivated the Merian-Iselin Hospital to act over the course of its long history. It was opened by a foundation in 1918, in a quiet part of Basle. The present building was built in 1970. Since then, a great deal has changed: Medicine has advanced still further, and operating techniques refined.

Touch-screen till from Selecta with LEGIC technology
Everything is being renewed
The Merian-Iselin Hospital today: The main specialization fields of this private hospital, where patients have a free choice of doctors, are orthopaedics and sports medicine - approximately half of all operations performed at the hospital are on the parts of the human body that provide support and allow movement.
In diagnostics and therapy too, this health center works in a highly professional way. The hospital has a unit for traditional Chinese medicine, a sports clinic (Swiss Olympic Medical Center), a radiology department with state-of-the-art imaging equipment, a very well-equipped laboratory and a physiotherapy department. Many patients are treated as either in-patients or out-patients.
Selecta won!
So that the hospital will also be able to keep pace with future developments, the building complex has been undergoing conversion work in stages since the year 2000. Of course, it has also been necessary to update the cash till system in the restaurant and cafeteria serving the 120-bed complex and its approximately 450-strong workforce.
'We had a choice of cash till systems from several suppliers - including a system from the latest Selecta generation', explained René Huber, responsible for food & beverages, and continued: 'Of course, we opted for the offer with the best price / performance ratio. But Selecta also won the contract because the Merian-Iselin Hospital has been using Selecta tills since 1994.'
Faster, thanks to LEGIC
Huber emphasized that 'we have always had good experience with Selecta'. However, changing over from the old cash registers in favor of the latest generation of easy-to-use touch-screen tills required staff to display a certain amount of flexibility.
This was because with the earlier system, badges with magnetic strips had been used on which the strips were repeatedly subjected to more and more wear. This has no longer been the case since the introduction of the new cashless customer cards employing non-contact LEGIC technology.
This „virtual wallet" has a chip - users recharge their cards themselves at a charger, without the need for additional staff resources. The new system prevents queues forming at tills during busy times: Whereas it took ten seconds each time until a magnetic strip badge had been read in, the reporting procedure with the LEGIC card now takes just under two seconds.
'This advantage was another reason behind our decision', the food & beverages manager emphasized, 'because everyone's entitled to eat their meal while it's still hot!' The changeover was also made without any problems. The hospital was also able to lease a rebooking station from Selecta, which automatically transfers the balances on the old cards to the new ones.
With a top result
Huber is completely satisfied with Selecta - from the consultation to the installation and training, right through to the service. The system supplied consists of a backoffice for administration, two Selecta tills with touch-screens, a set of Mettler Toledo scales and an emergency charging station, plus 600 LEGIC passes. Additional tills can be connected at any time if necessary.
