The eXaminer 3DX® 6500 Achieves Highest Throughput of any TSA-Certified EDS.

New York, NY, December 7, 2004 - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its Security and Detection Systems subsidiary has unveiled the new eXaminer 3DX® 6500 explosives detection system (EDS), advancing L-3’s highly successful eXaminer EDS with significant hardware and software enhancements.

The eXaminer is certified by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for aviation bag screening. The next generation eXaminer 3DX® 6500 has recently concluded certification testing at the TSA with a baggage
throughput well in excess of the TSA requirement.

“The high throughput rates are one result of L-3’s ongoing collaboration with the TSA, airports and airlines to enhance the eXaminer by responding to users’ needs,” said Allen Barber, senior vice president and general manager of L-3 Security and Detection Systems.

“The new eXaminer is not only able to scan an unprecedented high volume of checked baggage, but new features also increase the eXaminer’s overall efficiency and reliability, further reducing operating costs.”

The eXaminer 3DX® 6500 EDS introduces a number of industry-leading advancements that set it apart from competing systems, including:

  • Unprecedented baggage throughput of 600 bags per hour or more when operating within a fully integrated baggage handling system environment.
  • Industry-leading capability to accommodate long oversized baggage, such as skis or golf club bags, up to 100 inches (2.64 meters) in length.
  • A unique, active bag centering and alignment system that improves average throughput.
  • Increased entrance tunnel size (a full 1-meter width opening) simplifying integration with baggage handling systems.
  • A capability that allows users to adopt more stringent screening requirements at the “push of a button” if threat levels are increased or customers have additional security requirements, the eXaminer 3DX® 6500 can be adapted without a system configuration change.
  • Additional operational features that improve the overall reliability and efficiency of in-line systems.

According to Barber, in addition to automatically adapting to future security requirements, the eXaminer’s enhanced technology can screen bags multiple times in parallel for specific operator needs with only a single scan through the machine.

The advancements are available from L-3 Security and Detection Systems as an upgraded computer for the more than 500 earlier-generation eXaminer 3DX® 6000 systems that are already deployed around the world.

The eXaminer 3DX® 6500 also retains the unique technology and key features of the earlier-generation eXaminer 3DX® 6000, including its advanced 3-D imaging capability that allows operators to resolve alarmed bags more quickly, resulting in improved operational efficiencies. Networking capabilities introduced with the eXaminer 3DX® 6000, allowing images from multiple machines to be evaluated on any networked workstation, have also been retained.
