ASEO Europe - Choosing the Right Stab Vests and Body Armour

-ASEO Ltd

Security firms throughout the UK are now in the process of issuing stab vests, anti stab vests or stab proof vests to their employees.

Due to violent incidents, health & safety regulations, social change and the noticeable increase in anti social behaviour, countless security firms throughout the UK are now in the process of issuing stab vests, anti stab vests or stab proof vests to their employees.  Making the right choice when it comes to body armour is essential.

Overt vs Covert Body Armour

Most security professionals will agree that wearing an overt stab vest can often be perceived as confrontational and subsequently lead to an escalation rather than ‘prevention’ of aggression.  We at ASEO Europe genuinely believe that the advantage of wearing a covert anti stab vest will always outweigh any benefit overt body armour can offer.

Dealing with intoxicated individuals and other aggressors means dealing with people who can overreact at anytime to anything you say or do; people who are often capable of causing serious harm.  We are fully aware that security professionals who have chosen to wear overt body armour have often been attacked around the head or face, as the attacker could clearly see that the upper body was well protected.  However, wearing covert body armour diminishes this risk and can give the wearer the added benefit of taking a potential attacker by surprise by remaining ‘unaffected’ or ‘unharmed’ during a violent knife attack.  This can provide the perfect moment to escape or use legitimate self defence.

Stab VestWe at ASEO Europe have carried out extensive research into the advantage of covert body armour and the majority of our research projects indicated clearly that choosing covert body armour will most likely result in a lower risk of being attacked while on duty - compared to wearing overt or visible body armour.  Wearing a covert stab vest will allow you to deal with a potentially hostile situation, primarily using diplomacy and communication skills, while being effectively protected in case the situation escalates.

The only main advantage of using overt body armour is the fact that it can be taken off and put back on quickly, which is very useful for those security professionals returning to the office frequently in order to report or follow other procedures.

Stab Protection Levels

Body ArmorWhat level of stab or ballistic protection you or your employees require will depend on the potential threat.  It’s simple, making the right choice can mean the difference between life and death.

Home Office Certification exists for the following categories:

  • KR - Knife Resistance (Stab Vests - protection levels available: KR1, KR2 and KR3)
  • SP - Spike Protection (available: SP1, SP2 and SP3)
  • HG - Hand Gun Protection (Ballistic Vests - protection levels available: HG1, HG2 and HG3)
  • HG/KR - Knife Resistance & Hand Gun Protection (Dual Vests)
  • HG/KR/SP - Knife Resistance, Hand Gun Protection & Spike Protection (Dual Vests)

Explaining Protection Levels:

  • Good level of protection (sufficient for approx 85% of UK based security activities and operations)
  • A very high level of protection (used by Police Forces and high risk security operations only)
  • The highest level of protection (used by less than 0.1% of security operations.  Protection level is often reflected in a very high body armour weight)
